Vehicle for Personal Growth

The relationship we have with our partners and with ourselves can be a vehicle for personal growth and the development of a solid self. Human beings struggle with their need for connection verses their need for autonomy over their entire lifetimes. In my differentiation-based therapy one learns to juggle the tension between wanting more autonomy, common among men, to wanting more connection, common among women. One way is not better than the other. I believe this natural conflict, as well as other inevitable conflicts, are there for a reason, to help couples grow. You can learn to “read” the meaning of your sexual behavior in order to understand yourself and your sexual partner more completely. In doing so, you can develop a more passionate sexual relationship with your partner in the context of a long term committed marriage or partnership.
